Intrigued by the fanfare around the Gagosian Gallery, I wanted to check out this hallowed space in the flesh. One of their venues is at the very swanky 980 Madison Avenue address. At first, I wasn’t sure if it was an office building. I found it quite strange, coming from London, that you had to take an elevator up to the exhibit. They have this sort of ‘express elevator’ that takes you up to the galleries…filled with not that much. There were…a few…sparse… pieces. The one above I believe is by Florian Maier-Aichen. I entered a room with one piece on the wall and a security guard standing, forlornly, with no place to sit, all day. I thought, ‘Come on man. If you’re going to pay someone to guard a piece of art, at least make it interesting’. Suffice it to say, the guard did not look impressed. Neither did the art major/interns manning the phones and checking their Facebook pages simultaneously. I love the art world. I also love the name Gagosian. There is something slightly seductive about it. Maybe that’s why the place is such a turn on… I think I’ll go back when they show John Currin’s work again….
