For the uninitiated – BAM – the Brooklyn Academy of Music – is a cultural powerhouse of music, dance, theatre and film. On this evening, as you entered the building, BAM projected Twitter quotes on the lobby wall. These ‘tweets’ were from other creatives about the influence Pina Bauschhad on their work. It is no surprise that many talented people have sought out Pina Bausch as a leader of boundless creativity. Watching her production of Vollmond (Full Moon) I understood their hero worship. Vollmond is exuberant, joyful, energising and expresses such a joie de vivre you would have to be a corpse not to be totally moved by the experience. The dancers are so talented and fearless. It was inspiration in its purest form. If you ever hear of this production coming to your area, run as fast as you can to get a ticket, whatever the price, it is SO worth it. If you have to sell your clothes on eBay, skip the Starbucks cappuccinos for a month or make beans on toast ad infinitum – do it. I am not effusive over many things but Pina Bausch’s Vollmondis no thing, it is creativity come to life in an electrifying onstage masterpiece. For reals.
