I was looking through my photos and came across this:
I forgot how cute the little feller was. Then it dawned on me. It’s the work of Space Invader. He is represented by the Jonathan Levine Gallery in New York. I always find it fascinating how the rebellious nature of graffiti and underground art becomes commoditised. No one is more prolific – or well known – in the graffiti come high brow art world than Banksy. That is how I know who Space Invader is and more pointedly, his ‘cousin'(?), Mr. Brainwash. Honestly, if you have not seen ‘Exit Through the Gift Shop‘ run and watch it now. After Vollmond this is the next piece of art you need to see. I say art because it is it truth? Or is it an elaborate hoax? Another well know graffiti artist – of the infamous Obama ‘Hope’ poster fame – Shephard Fairey (who appears in the film) says the ‘documentary’ is not a hoax in this Vanity Fair article. What ever it is, it is an intriguing piece of story telling. If you’ve seen it, what do you make of it? Is Mr. Brainwash for real? Or is it just a clever Banksy euphemism for the self-referential art world and how he takes them – and us – for an entertaining ride?
