On the Upper West Side of Central Park is the apartment building where John Lennon once lived. On 8th December 1980 he was shot across the street. It was a tragic and senseless act, not to mention one the greatest losses to art and music. The infamous – and iconic building The Dakota – has legions of gawkers that meander from Central Park to marvel at its architecture and history. Located at 1 West 72nd Street, it offers up the kind of grandeur that could only happen in a monied city like New York. A doorman faithfully guards its entrance, while camera totting tourists try to get a glimpse of the interior courtyard and its famous residents. In the photos below, you can just make out the Native America relief in the tilted square at the top of the building. These details – and the building’s folklore – make for an intriguing visit. Once you’ve had your fill, check out Magnolia Cupcakes on Columbus Avenue, right around the corner.
