The preview evening of Yayoi Kusuma’s work at the Whitney Museum was totes amaze balls. Fitting, since she’s probably best know for her ball-like, dot paintings. The exhibit as a whole is well worth seeing. Kusuma’s complicated, chaotic and skillful work can at times be challenging, but it is certainly never dull.
The Japanese artist, who lives in a mental institution of her own choosing, is clever and outlandish, a kind of Japanese pixie. Between her Whitney retrospective and collaboration with Louis Vuitton, the global recognition she has always sought has now, finally, been accomplished, どうもありがとうございました.
Yayoi Kusuma at the Whitney Museum from 12th July until 30th Sept 2012
