New York City’s Best Coffee Shops

Living in New York you get so many choices for everything. Want a bagel? No problem. Want some “schmear” (aka cream cheese)? You can get any flavor you like. The list goes on and on. Then, there’s the coffee. I don’t know if I lucked out in my neighborhood, or if New Yorkers are demanding and ask for the best (What? A New Yorker? Demand? Never.) We’ll say it’s a little bit of both. If you’re visiting the city for the first time or are just looking for a new cafe to savor a delicious cup of joe, here are my top five places in New York to enjoy the best coffee in the city:

Birch – this is the newest addition to the neighborhood. Their coffee is super strong and delicious. You will literally be tap dancing out the door.

Commons – a coffee at this compact space will definitely brighten your morning. They have the distinct benefit of also being a bar. This tiny cafe will keep your eating and drinking needs fulfilled from morning, noon to night. I love their fresh salads and scrumptious sandwiches too.

Stumptown Roasters, Ace Hotel – this coffee outpost, originally from Portland, Oregon, couldn’t be in a trendier location than the Ace Hotel. Grab a coffee at Stumptown, sit in the lobby to write your next screenplay, and then pop over to Opening Ceremony to buy something to wear to your next film premiere.

Joe – this is one of the bigger coffee houses in Chelsea that offers beverages and delicious breakfast treats. Always an interesting crowd.

Cafe Grumpy – don’t let the name put you off. Cafe Grumpy is pure caffeinated heaven. Located in both NYC and Brooklyn, the Chelsea outpost makes strong, creamy cappuccinos that are addictive and mood boosting. Their soft, moist banana bread is *possibly* better than your gran’s. The cafe does not allow laptops; so bring your old school notepads to scribble down your thoughts and imaginings.
